Marketing Guru Almanac

Marketing Guru Almanac

worlds greatest marketers

Need Some Inspiration?  Look No Further.

One of the best ways to get ahead in life is to learn from the experts in your chosen field that came before you.  In marketing, this is especially true because human nature changes so little over time and the techniques that were successful in the past are just as successful today.

In the years I’ve been honing my marketing skills, I’ve spent a vast amount of time poring through the life works of some pretty incredible marketers, many of whom have profoundly changed my views on the industry as a whole.  Indeed, I started my career as a journalist with little respect for contemporary marketing, but as I grew older and wiser, and stumbled across more and more brilliant and honorable marketers, I began to see marketing as a tool for helping entrepreneurs fulfill their dreams and not as one to push unwanted products.

As a source of inspiration to aspiring marketers and seasoned vets alike, I’ve collected the names and vital information of those who have come before me, men with vision who continue to push the scientific boundaries of marketing.  The gurus of marketing who help make marketing the terrific and rewarding profession it can be.

The New & Improved Mustang Daily

Cal Poly’s “Learn By Doing” philosophy appears to be alive and well, as evidenced by today’s launch of the beautifully redesigned Mustang Daily website, online home to the university’s student-run newspaper.

Not only is the site vastly more appealing to look at, it has many new features that should increase the site’s readership and because it was built with Wordpress (our favorite Content Management System and the engine that runs our site, as well), it offers more flexibility for the journalists behind Mustang Daily to add more new features as time goes on.

I’ve really got to hand it to everyone involved, including Lauren Rabaino, one of the hardest working editors the Daily’s ever had.  As a Cal Poly and Mustang Daily alum myself, I’d like to thank the entire staff for creating such a visually stimulating piece of online journalism.  Be sure to give Lauren your kudos and support one of the country’s great student newspapers.

HOW TO: 25 Twitter Strategies To Improve Your Business

Twitter Can Help You Build Your Brand

To many people, Twitter doesn’t make a lot of sense at first.  How in the world can sending little 140 character messages to a bunch of people, many of whom you’ve never met, help you grow your business and build your brand?

First, you have to ask yourself what it is you are trying to accomplish.  I’m a huge believer in planning things first and testing the results as you go along.  Using Twitter should be no different than the rest of your marketing efforts.  In order to help you understand how Twitter can help your business grow, here are a few ideas for you to think about during your brainstorming sessions.

25 Strategies For Building Your Business Brand On Twitter

1.  Arrange Meetups – Staying connected with your customers and vendors is vital for success in today’s marketplace.  Send periodic Tweets about upcoming meetups with other local Twitter users.

2.  Get Feedback – Ask your customers their thoughts on your products and services.  Because everyone will get your request at once and they can reply easily, you can get a lot of feedback in a short amount of time.

3.  Grow Your Traffic – Promote your blog and website through Tweets.  Blog posts about your industry make excellent Tweets.

4.  Connect With Others – Share other links of interest to you with your network.  By providing useful information, you make it desirable to connect with and follow you.

5.  Find Out Who’s Talking About You – By using #hash searches, you can see what others are saying about your company.  All you have to do is type #yourcompanyname in the Twitter search box and all posts with your company name will come up.

6.  Promote Social Bookmark Submissions – If you have submitted your blog posts to social bookmarking sites like Digg and delicious, promote these links on Twitter to increase their popularity and thus, traffic to your blog.

7.  Stay Informed On Your Industry – News breaks in real-time on Twitter.  If something big happens in your industry, it may very well break on Twitter first.  Keep up with industry news with #hash searches on desired topics.

8.  Post Jobs – Got a job opening?  Post it on Twitter and you’re bound to get some qualified candidates with links to their websites where you can do a little homework.

9.  Provide Live Coverage Of Your Events – If you hold company events or workshops, announce them on Twitter and provide updates throughout so those who could not attend can follow along.

10. Connect With Industry Influencers – Do some searches for those who are influential on your industry and follow them.  You can even send them a direct message; however, you should do so very sparingly.

11. Share Industry News – Got the scoop on some inside industry news?  Break the news on Twitter and build your credibility.

12. Conduct Market Research – Twitter is the perfect tool for conducting research.  You can run polls and surveys, ask questions and follow niche topics all through Twitter.

13. Reinforce Your Current Relationships – Keep in touch with your contacts with Twitter.  Because posts are so short, you can easily keep up-to-date with your current contacts to build on those relationships.

14. Promote Specific Content – Got a new product, service or sale?  Promote these things on Twitter to get the word out fast.

15. Project Communication – If you have a project with multiple workers, stay in the loop through Twitter.  Use #’s in your posts to tag them so each member can find them easily.

16. Pitching Journalists & Bloggers – Press releases not getting the job done?  Try pitching your story ideas to journalists through Twitter.  You may want to email them first to see if they are interested in getting story ideas in this manner before you try it.

17. Find Joint Venture Relationships – Joint ventures are a great way to grow your business without spending a fortune.  Look for suitable partners on Twitter and send them a direct message with your idea.

18. Idea Generation – Need a new idea for a blog post, product or service offering or promotion?  Ask the Twitter community and get feedback almost instantly.

19. Client Oversight – If part of your job entails keeping track of what people think about your clients, Twitter is the perfect tool.  Use # searches with your client’s company name to find out what people are saying.

20. Answer Questions – People ask questions through Twitter all day long.  Keep an eye out for questions related to your industry that you can answer to build your company’s credibility.

21. Eliminate Cold Calls – Got a prospect you’d like to approach with a business proposition?  If they are on Twitter, you can follow them to find out how they operate so you’ll have a better understanding of how to speak to them on the phone.  You may even find out they’d prefer to be contacted through Twitter.

22. Competitive Research – As with client oversight, it’s an easy task keeping up with your competitors on Twitter through the use of # searches.  Identify your competitors who are on Twitter and follow their timelines.

23. PR Tool – Sometimes bad things happen.  Instead of burying your head in the sand, be proactive and explain your side of the story and how you are going to be accountable.  Launch your crisis prevention campaign on Twitter for an immediate jump on damage control.

24. Event Reminder – In addition to arranging meetups, you can also remind your Twitter followers of upcoming events.  this works especially well at the last minute.

25. Hold Contests – Everybody loves contests.  Hold your contest on Twitter to build excitement and grow your followers.

Twitter may look a little silly at first, but once you get to understand how you can use this free service to grow your business and build your brand, you’ll begin to see why it has fast become one of the most popular destinations on the Internet.  You may not have time to put all of these strategies into practice, but you can pick and choose the ones that are most immediate for your business needs and see results almost immediately.

HOW TO: 20 Ways To Get People To Follow Your Business On Twitter

HOW TO: 20 Ways To Get People To Follow Your Business On Twitter

Build A Business Following On Twitter

Build A Business Following On Twitter

Now that you have a Twitter account for your business, it’s time to promote it and build your following. When you created your account, you should have spent a few minutes inviting your email contacts to join you on Twitter. If you haven’t, go back and do this first.  As you can see from the picture above, Twitter is growing fast and can be a useful tool for growing your online presence.

Once you have a few followers, let’s get started on growing your Twitter community for business purposes.

20 Ways To Build Your Business Presence

1.  Promote Your Twitter Profile on Your Website – When you created your account, you gave it a name (probably your company name). It should look something like this: http://twitter.com/prevailpr. Add this link to your business website and promote it from within.

TIP: Place your Twitter link in a prominent location.  The more people that see it on your business site, the faster your following will grow.

2.  Follow Others – When you find other Twitter users you find interesting, click the little follow button under their name to become one of their followers.  In the spirit of reciprocity, most people you follow will in turn follow you.

TIP: Use the search box to look for targeted prospects for your business and follow them.  They may choose to follow you back and in time decide for themselves that they need your products or services.

3.  Promote Your Twitter Profile in Your Store – If you have a store, promote your Twitter profile at the point of sale.  Ask them to send you a message on Twitter once they have followed you for a special promotion you have created specifically for this purpose.

TIP: If you can customize your receipts, add something like “Follow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/prevailpr for exclusive discounts”.

4.  Promote Your Twitter Profile on Your Business Cards – Twitter is just as good at communicating with your customers as the phone and email, and in certain aspects, even better.  Include your Twitter link on your business cards with your other communication details

TIP: Be creative with your Twitter marketing by including fun or value. When you give your card to people, let them know why they should follow you and they probably will.

5.  Promote Your Twitter Profile in Your Advertisements – Your current advertisements are a great way to get your Twitter link in front of loads of people for free. It shouldn’t cost you anything to change your ad and you’ll get lots of followers just for including this little piece of information.

TIP: Remember value! If you have the space, let people know what they will get for following you on Twitter and you’ll see your conversion rates skyrocket.

6.  Promote Your Twitter Profile in Your Network – In today’s economy, it’s imperative to spend time networking with other business people in your market or industry.  Tell those you already know in these networks about Twitter and ask them to follow you.

TIP: Be sure to follow everyone else in your network and search for them if you have to.  Even if they haven’t started following you, they will when they realize you are following them.  You can use a # sign to narrow your searches.  For instance, #sanluisobispo will find Tweets with this tag.

7.  Promote Your Twitter Profile on Other Sites – Do you already have a MySpace, Facebook, YouTube or LinkedIn account?  If so, promote your Twitter profile within these networks, as well.

TIP: Just like on your company website, promote your Twitter link in a prominent location to get the most attention.  Better yet, write a blog post or status update.

8.  Promote Your Twitter Profile in Your Email Signature – Email signatures are a great way to add some excitement to the end of your emails and one of the easiest ways to promote your Twitter link.  If you don’t already use a signature, typically all you have to do is add it in your settings.

TIP: Depending on your business, your email signature may be seen by a lot of people.  To increase these numbers, ask people to tell others about your Twitter link within your email signature.

9.  Use Twitter Packs – This community-generated directory of Twitter profiles is organized by topics and geographic areas.  Search for your targeted followers and follow them.

TIP: Add your profile to the directory.  Be sure to submit your profile to the most relevant categories.

10. Promote Your Twitter Profile in Guest Posts/Columns – One of the best ways to brand yourself as an expert is to write a guest post on other industry blogs or to write a column for an industry publication.  If you have these opportunities, be sure to mention your Twitter link.

TIP: A good way to leverage these opportunities is to invite people to get exclusive add-on material of the topic you just covered by following you on Twitter and then sending this information out in a Tweet at a scheduled time.

11. Tweet Often – If you haven’t figured it out by now, a Tweet is the 140 character message your followers will see in the Twitterstreams, the list of chronological messages found on your Twitter profile.  A great way to get more followers is to Tweet about interesting things on a consistent basis.

TIP: Think of yourself as a filter for your market and Tweet about insightful topics in your industry.  The more useful you can be to others, the more likely they will follow you.  Asking questions is a good way to get people to reply to your Tweets.

12. Converse With Others – On the flip side, it’s also important to respond to other Tweets and build conversations with others in your market.  It’s never good to be perceived as a “taker”, so take part instead.

TIP: The best replies are those that help solve someone’s specific problem.  Keep an eye out for problems you can solve that directly relate to your business.

13. Tweet at Peak Times – The majority of Twitter users are U.S. based and use the service during U.S. business hours.  Even if you have to take a five minute break during your workday, it’s better to Tweet during business hours than after them.

TIP: Tweet about limited-time offers in your store.  Say something like “15% off product X for the next 2 hours only!” and then promote your sale through other avenues so that your customers understand they have to follow you on Twitter at certain times to take advantage of these offers.

14. Organize a Contest through Your Twitter Profile – Contests are always a good way to build excitement in your brand.  Promote a contest through your store, website and Twitter profile and name the winner in a Tweet.

TIP: Think about the type of prizes your prospects would find most beneficial and then offer them to the winners.  those that don’t win are a great pool of prospects for you to market to in the future.

15. Ask Specific Users to Recommend You – The more time you spend on Twitter, the more users you’ll find that share similar markets with you.  Follow these people for awhile and then once they are following you, send them a message and ask them if they’ll recommend you to their followers.

TIP: If your business is strictly local, join up with other local businesses or those individuals who have some influence in your area.

16. Use Twitter as a Customer Service Tool – Customer service should be one of your top priorities and giving your customers a way to contact you is a a good start.  Let your customers know they can send their inquiries through Twitter.

TIP: Use Twitter to build a better FAQ section for your website.  Ask your followers to send you their questions and see which ones get the most attention.  Then add the answers to these questions to your company website.

17. Send Valuable Content to Influential Members – Most influential members of any network are starving for more valuable content to recommend to their followers.  Find those who are influential on your target market and send them articles and information their followers might find useful and allow them to share it with them.

TIP: Be sure to include your contact information in any content you send them.  The point of sharing this content is to get more traffic for your Twitter profile, which won’t happen if they don’t know how to find it.  For best results, create an additional report exclusively for their followers that they can access after following you.

18. Use Twellow Twellow is basically the Yellow Pages for Twitter users and the largest directory of Twitter users on the web.  Search by topic and geographic region and follow users in your target market.

TIP: Make a schedule for following people.  You don’t want to follow too many people at once.  Let some of them follow you back before following more so that these numbers are in close relation.

19. Use Twubble – Twubble is another fun tool to help grow your business following on Twitter.  Instead of searching for similar users, Twubble searches your current followers for followers they have in common.  The idea is that the more they have in common, the more likely they are to have in common with you, as well.

TIP: It’s important to keep your Twitter following focused and in alignment with your business purposes. Spend time pruning your follower list to get the most out of this great tool.

20. Promote Your Twitter RSS Feed – Just like your blog and social networking profiles, Twitter includes an RSS feed that allows people to include it in their newsfeeds.  Don’t forget to promote this feature in your other Twitter efforts. To add Prevail PR’s Twitter timeline to your RSS feed, click here.

TIP: Many people don’t want to have to sign in to multiple services and newsfeeds let them get all kinds of content in one place.  To keep track of multiple Twitter feeds start your own newsfeed at Netvibes or iGoogle.

Whether your business is online, offline or both, Twitter can help you grow a community around your brand and build sales.  Like most Internet marketing, though, it takes time.  With effort, you’ll be able to build a legitimate following in very little time, but in order to convert this following into increased sales, you’ll have to put your best foot forward.

Be yourself, be helpful and be accessible.  These are the keys to making Twitter work for you and your business.

Use Twitter To Build Your Online Presence

And Communicate With Your Prospects

Twitter stormed onto the scene a couple of years ago, one of many players in a crowded field of micro-blogging services.  Fast forward two years and Twitter is literally everywhere.  Companies like Jet Blue and Chevrolet have successfully leveraged Twitter to build relationships with their customers, getting customer feedback and building new networks.

And now that you’ve decided to start building your company’s profile on Twitter, the first thing you need to do is set up your account.  Luckily, like most things to do with Twitter, this task is extremely simple.

Step #1 – First things, first, visit Twitter and click on the green “Get Started-Join!” button.

Step #2 – Now for the hard part.  Remember your name and type it in the “full Name” field.  Then choose a Username and Password and enter in a valid email address.  Next choose whether or not you’d like to receive email updates from Twitter, provide the appropriate Captcha words and click “Create my account”.  Since you are using your Twitter account to build your business presence, use your company’s name as your Username and later add your logo to your profile.

jointheconversationStep #3 – So far, so good.  Now that you have you very own Twitter account, it’s time to see if anyone you know is already a member of the service.  To find these people, all you have to do is choose the email accounts you use and click invite and Twitter will send an invitation to join your new network to all of the people you choose in your email contacts.  Within one minute, you could already have 100’s of people following your conversation.  You can also find friends on Twitter if you like.

Add FriendsStep #4 – Now that you’ve got your profile set up and have a few people following you, the next thing you’ll want to do is announce your arrival on Twitter.  Click “Home” and you’ll be taken to a new Twitter hone page that highlights the activity on your account.  Right now, it should be empty.  Change that by typing your message in the “What Are You Doing?” box and click “update”.  Remember, on Twitter, your messages can never be longer than 140 total characters, including your username.

whatareyoudoing

Step #5 – Before long, you’ll have a steady stream of traffic coming through your Twitter profile and you’re probably going to want to brand your page a little bit.  To do this, all you have to do is go to your profile and upload a picture of your choice.  I’ve optioned to have my picture and our logo, but you can choose or either or both.  You can also change the background picture and colors to match your company identity.

Step #6 - Search for members that are relevant to your industry and add a few of them.  Now when these people update their accounts with a new message, their messages will appear alongside your own in your Twitterstream.  If the people you choose to follow decide to follow you too, your future messages will then appear in their Twitterstreams.  Obviously it’s good to have lots of followers, but like everything else in marketing, quality is better than quantity.  A good rule of thumb for starters is to keep the number of people following you and the number of people you are following close together.

Well, that’s it.  Congratulations on joining one of the most popular networks in the world.  Subscribe to our feed or follow us on Twitter to get the rest of the posts in this series.

How A Blog Schedule Can Improve Your Small Business

Before fracturing my arm late in 2007, my blogging schedule was planned up to 4-5 months in advance. After fracturing my arm, it became non-existent. Sadly after nearly a year of rehab and time away from blogging, I got used to not writing every day. Writing hardly at all, actually.

A few weeks ago I was looking through some of the posts I wrote back then, and it was obvious that having a blog schedule had four major benefits:

#1 – It allows you to plan your posts accordingly. When you are planning in advance, you can tailor your posts seasonally and leverage holiday curiosity, as well as trends in your own sales cycle.

#2 – Scheduling your posts allows you to package your posts into more useful content. No one really wants to read a 5 page post, but combining 5 one-page posts into a whitepaper or ebook can bring your blog long-term, targeted traffic. Almost two years after posting our 30 blogging tips report, we’re still getting a consistent trickle of traffic from search engines and social media sites.

#3 – Planning allows you to customize your posts to not only educate your readers, but also to highlight your services. In my opinion, the point of having a business blog is to show how you are different and how your specific products or services are the solution to a specific set of needs. By planning ahead, your posts will do a much better job of leading your readers to this conclusion.

#4 – Blog scheduling exempts you from writer’s block. While other bloggers are brainstorming for ideas to write about each day, you can sit down and focus on getting something done instead. For me, this is probably the best benefit because I already feel a few hours short of a full day.

NEW BLOG SCHEDULE

This time, instead of 4-5 months, I went all the way with it and planned out a whole year’s worth of posts. Of course, other posts will be sprinkled in as time allows, but for the most part, I think you’ll get far more value out of our future posts.

SOCIAL NETWORKING MONTH

So, without further ado, I’d like to announce “Social Networking Month” here at Prevail PR. Social networking has skyrocketed in popularity over the last six years or so, but small businesses are just now starting to see how social networking can help grow their businesses.

Throughout the month, we’ll be taking an in-depth look at four of the most popular and useful social networks for small businesses:

  • twitter Twitter – April 3-10: Twitter Toolbox
  • linkedinLinkedIn – April 13-17: LinkedIn Toolbox
  • facebookFacebook – April 20-24: Facebook Toolbox
  • myspaceMySpace – April 27-March 1: MySpace Toolbox

25 Marketing Tips To Grow Through Lean Times

While there is no such thing as the perfect marketing plan, there are some things you can do to continue growing, even during a sluggish economy.  Instead of throwing your hard-earned profits away on expensive display ads, implement as many of these 25 recession-proofing tips as possible and watch your sales grow overnight.

Tip #1 – Work Your Past & Current Customer Lists: Depending on your business, it cost you tens to hundreds of dollars for each of the names on your customer list.  Combine this with the fact that the easiest sales you can make are those to your past customers, and this tip alone can help you get more sales today.

Add Create a special offer just for the customers on your list and send it out.  Be sure to include a call to action!

Tip #2 – Eliminate Your Ineffective Advertising: Ineffective ads are one of the quickest ways to sap your company’s cash.  Try some of these tips to improve your ads, hire someone to help or give them up altogether.

Add Test your ads immediately and focus on understanding your perfect customer.  By knowing exactly who these people are, you will have a better idea of which publications and media to place your ads.

Tip #3 – Follow Up On Your Offers: After each offer you send out, simply follow up with a phone call or email to see if the prospect received your offer.  Use this opportunity to provide some free advice instead of putting all the pressure on the prospect to make a purchase.

Add The phone can be your best friend.  Try to call 5 or 10 prospects a day to offer your advice.  Thank you letters are also a great way to keep in contact with your customers.

Tip #4 – Keep Following Up With Your Prospects: After each and every contact with a prospect, it is wise to make some effort to follow up.  Whether they have come into your store, sent you an email or called your office, get back to them as soon as possible to thank them for their interest.

Add Create processes for following up with prospects and customers.  This will save you time and energy and systematically help you follow up with everyone.

Tip #5 – Use Risk Reversal In Your Offers: In all transactions, someone has to assume the risk.  Typically the risk is placed upon the consumer, but watch your sales grow by taking the risk upon yourself instead.

Add Test out different risk reversal ideas with some of your best customers and see which ones they prefer.  Then roll these ideas out to all your prospects.

Tip #6 – Upsell After Each Of Your Sales: Any business can benefit from upselling.  In fact, sales often increase more than 30% just by asking someone who has just bought from you if they’d like to buy another complimentary product or service.

Add Create products or services you can upsell at the point of purchase if you don’t already have any.  You can also look into selling someone else’s products or services and earn a commission.

Tip #7 – Sell To Your Buyers Again: After you’ve made the sale, send another offer within the next three weeks.  A good percentage will buy again and you’ll develop a closer relationship with the rest.

Add Make your follow-up offers work for you.  Use this contact to allay buyer’s remorse, solicit referrals and include information that will help your customers use your products or services better and more often.

Tip #8 – Increase Your Profits With Endorsements: If you are doing you’re job right, your clients and vendors appreciate and trust doing business with you.  You can help them even more by endorsing other products or services that would improve their lives. You can also find other businesses that might be interested in endorsing your services to their lists.  Either way, work out a revenue agreement and enjoy the profits.

Add Look at the services you already use and trust and ask them if you can set up an endorsement campaign.  Handle as much of the work as possible so they can just collect their money and you’ll have a winning long-term deal.

Tip #9 – Use Your Competitors Resources: Finding qualified leads is expensive; converting them is even more expensive.  That doesn’t mean you can’t make a little money from the leads you don’t convert.  Sell them to competitors you trust and respect and know will get the job done the way the client deserves.

Add Figure out your average cost per lead then offer to sell your unsold leads for a price less than that amount.  If your competitors have a similar average cost, you’ll be doing them a favor.

Tip #10 – Offer Extended Guarantees & Incentives: Sometimes, the guarantee of a specific benefit or the addition of valuable incentives make the difference in the sale.  Put as much value as your product as possible and then back it with complete confidence.

Add Find out what guarantees and incentives your direct competitors offer and then match or surpass them.

Tip #11 – Lock In Your Sales In Advance: Just about any type of service industry have the ability to lock in sales in advance for consistent growth.  This way, you’ll also lock out the option of buying elsewhere.

Add Provide a portion of your services free up front in exchange for agreeing to continue doing business with you in the future.  You can also provide a lower-fee in return for an upfront payment.

Tip #12 – License Successful Concepts: Know something your competitors don’t?  You may not want to share this information with those in your direct market, but if it wouldn’t hurt you to share it with those in outside markets, license this information and market it to them.

Add Write a sales letter and mail it to businesses similar to your own in non-competing markets.  Be sure to entice them with specifics on how your process will improve their business.

Tip #13 – Break Even On The Front End: Do you know how much it cost you to make a sale?  Do you know how often your customers buy from you again? Do you know how long they continue to buy from you? You should. Only then will you know exactly how much you can afford to “buy” a customer.

Add Once you have calculated this number, give away your products or services at the lowest price you can afford and then proceed to provide constant customer service and satisfaction to increase the length and frequency of your sales cycle.

Tip #14 – Test Your Prices: Testing your prices will help you understand how valuable your goods are to the marketplace.  Many times, business owners shortchange themselves early in their business and never think to raise prices higher than their comfort zone.

Add Split-test your prices by creating multiple landing pages on your website.  Also, use Google Adwords to put your tests to a larger market.

Tip #15 – Reposition Yourself As An Expert: People love to be led and admire leaders. Learn as much as possible about your industry and act as a filter to provide valuable information and service for your clients.  Consumers prefer to buy from those they believe are the best at what they do.

Add Launch a blog on your website if you don’t already have one.  Use this space as your soapbox, but make sure you are bringing a new angle or you’ll risk looking like you’re following your competitors instead of standing out from them.

Tip #16 – Buy Lists From Closing Businesses: For a variety of reasons, many companies go out of business every day. These businesses may find it very beneficial that you’re interested in buying a customer list they may not have placed value in any more.

Add Use Google Alerts to keep an ear out for businesses quitting in your industry or market.  Then offer to split future profits made from their list with them.

Tip #17 – Decrease Your Overhead: Keeping your overhead down could be the key to staying in business and could be a huge “profit center” in and of itself.  Look for wastes and excesses in your business and eliminate them.

Add Sell off or trade excess inventory, trim unneeded staff, cut ineffective advertising from your budget and farm out overload work to other companies and/or share costs with them.

Tip #18 – Don’t Burn Your Bridges: Even when cutting staff or apologizing for a business error, you can use the opportunity to build that relationship.  Offer to hire the staff back when possible and provide referrals for staff and departing customers.  You never know who they know and it’s just good business karma to take the high road.

Add If there is a bridge you’ve burned, it’s not too late to rebuild it.  Give the person a call or send them a hand-written letter with your sincere feelings and ask them if there is anything you can help them with.

Tip #19 – Don’t Let Your Head Get Too Big: Even if you provide the best product or service in the world, other businesses are going to continue to try and entice them away from you.  Don’t assume you are the only option and you’ll increase your chances that you will be.

Add Make sure to contact your customers from time to time and ask them for their feedback and ask them if there is anything you could have done better so that you can do it better next time.

Tip #20 – Get Responses To Your Ads & Sales Letters: Use the AIDA checklist before paying for any of your ads or sales letters if they don’t pass this checklist, you’re probably wasting your money. Get your prospect’s Attention, follow that up by piquing their Interest by building upon their Desires and lastly, ask for a specific Action you’d like them to take.

Add Sending out a sales letter to a targeted group with a special offer on your excess inventory is a great way to make some money immediately.  Be sure to make your offer time-sensitive.

Tip #21 – Make Your Headlines Pull: Figure out what makes you, your product or your services stand out from the competition and then promote this information in a benefit-driven headline.  You’ll get much more attention this way.

Add Make sure to test your headlines.  Remember, your headline is the most important part of your ad, so spend some time figuring out the best ones.

Tip #22 – Analyze Your Results: The real gold is in the results of your testing.  Categorize and crunch these numbers and study their trends over time to maximize your future campaigns.

Add Create an Excel database of your advertising and sales letter campaigns.  Include the cost of each campaign, results, what was tested, the offer, what media you used and any other relevant information.

Tip #23 – Don’t Rely On One Source: Diversify your product or service line, who you advertise with, where you get referrals and your vendors.  Slow economic times have a way of shaking up the marketplace and it’s your duty to identify and work with the best.

Add Discover new niches that compliment your services.  By expanding your services to cater to these niches, you will create new streams of income.

Tip #24 – Get Your Customers To Give You Referrals: The “cheapest” way to get new clients is to have your current ones send them to you.  By giving you their stamp of approval, referrers are presold and highly likely to buy from you.

Add Create a referral system that benefits your referrers, too.  Make sure to recognize their efforts whether you make the sale or not and follow through on any compensation you may have promised.

Tip #25 -  Recognize & Identify Your Hidden Assets: If you’ve been in business for awhile, chances are you have some assets that you aren’t even aware of.  Do a thorough audit of your business to identify these assets and then brainstorm ideas on how you can leverage them.

Add Think outside the box or hire a marketing consultant to help you uncover the hidden assets in your business.  Develop these assets to create new streams of income and grow your business on a consistent basis.

Slow economies are notorious for shaking out the weak businesses in every industry.  Use these recession-proofing tips to make sure your company isn’t one of them.

Small Business Information Products Tip #1 – No Inventory Cost

Small Business Information Products Tip #1 – No Inventory Cost

No InventoryWhat is it that you or your business can offer that will immediately gain the trust of your prospects, requires no storage space and costs you absolutely nothing in inventory costs?

Your expertise.

One of the reasons you should have a blog for your small business is that it helps establish you as a thought leader in your industry. It should also help differentiate your company from your competitors.

So how can you speed up this process?

Create an information product to give away or sell on your blog.

Information products come in all shapes and sizes, but they typically have several things in common. One of these traits is that they require no storage space which means that you can offer them to your prospects at absolutely no cost to your business. You won’t need a warehouse to store your information product. In fact, you won’t even need a shelf. All you will need to do is create the product of your choice, upload it to your blog, provide a link or create an opt-in mechanism and promote it in places your prospects hang out.

You can even automate the whole process, a tip we will be discussing later on in the month.

Being able to offer valuable information and services to your prospects for free or low cost is a powerful way to build your trust, reputation and brand. And with no inventory cost, you really need to ask if you can afford NOT to offer an information product. Our goal this month is to help you figure what kind of information product to offer, how to offer it, what topics to cover and how to create one from scratch so that you can be giving your prospects one of these valuable products as soon as possible.

Stick around, and together we’ll succeed.
